Sound
Belgrade street music is a sound archive of musical activity on the streets of the capital of Serbia. My goal is to preserve these sounds for the future generations. The idea of recording street musicians came to me when city officials announced in the year 2013, that everyone who wants to play on the streets of Belgrade needs to go through an audition. I find this law quite a stupid one and I believe that it diminishes the anthropological value of informal and non educated street musicians. All the sounds are free for download.Collection can be found here: Belgrade Street Music
The basic idea relies on the concept of up-to-date sound mapping of world metropolises and the presentation of the atmosphere of a city in audio format; the portrayal of the spirit of a place and the dynamics of a certain locality’s development by recording authentic daily life. One of the project’s aims is to document oral history by methodically conducting and recording interviews with members of the local community. The overall aim being to gather the memories, opinions, feelings and experiences of places, of people and of events that have, through their retelling, become part of the identity of a neighbourhood or local community. Over time, the relationships between local residents, their habits and way of life have become part of an intangible historical heritage. Furthermore, the archive could become material relevant for further historical study or for reconstructive processes. The first phase of the project focuses on the selection of local areas whose social history has undergone a long development process. Following the initial mapping, and as a result of intensive interaction with the local community, points on the digital map enable users to familiarise themselves with the social culture, values and conventions of local people. Our aim is, therefore, to offer visitors to the city (or parts thereof) an insight into what led to the formation of its identity. Similarly, the project makes it possible to experience the unique spirit of a neighbourhood or local area via the internet, thereby making this otherwise elusive product accessible to younger generations.
